Design Engineer

 

Faurecia Automotive Seating, LLC, a French-based Tier-1 automotive seating supplier in Auburn Hills, Michigan, seeks a Design Engineer for automotive complete seat system design and development using CATIA and UG Kinematics, from concept/prototype to production, including new and verification of designs.  Duties:  design and develop plastic components for global complete seat programs which comply with ECE, FMVSS, ADR, and KMVSS governmental seat and safety requirements; perform dimensional material limit calculations for blow molded and plastic injection molded parts; evaluate manufacturability of plastic design for complete seat, including arm rest, head rest, and mechanisms; determine tool and die processes to manufacture complete seat systems; determine minimum foam thickness to meet durability, comfort, and feasibility constraints; develop plastic designs to satisfy plastic injection and blow molded process feasibility constraints; use material resistance calculations for pre-definition of component section characteristics; perform “meat to metal” calculations; evaluate plastics materials and calculate strength and manufacturability for design cost reduction and value for global manufacturability; design manual and power stamped seat mechanisms and structures (including risers, adjuster attachment brackets, and towel bar) for integration into seat system; use finite element analysis (FEA) results to optimize complete seat components; represent company at customer design meetings.  

Minimum education and experience required:  Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering (or foreign equivalent) + 2 years’ experience in a complete seat design position with a Tier-1 automotive seating supplier.  Special experience required:  Must have 2 years’ experience with each of the following:  analysis of complete seat design feasibility and functionality; evaluation of technical process, tooling design, and production sequencing; use of CATIA and UG Kinematics to design complete seat free-form surfaces and parts, perform digital mockup analysis, and determine part trajectory; study of tolerance stackup and performing capability; use of FEA for recliner handles, adjuster handles, back-panels and side shields; identification of root cause of plastic performance issues due to vehicle environment, mechanics, and seat structure rigidity; analysis and evaluation of plastic seating performance issues, to include material, noise, and manufacturing variation; design for assembly for plastics seat components.
